Me in Basel (EC 2008)
Hi fellow football fan!
I am a big fan of football. My favorite clubteam is Ajax Amsterdam and I support the Dutch national team. In the last few years I always thought that technical appliances for referees would be used in football within reasonable time but I seem to be wrong.
The current situation is in my opinion ridiculous. Thousands of fans watch a football match live on television and see everything that happens on the field due to the many camera’s and replays. The fans in the stadium are updated on doubtful situation by their television-watching-friends.
The only people who do not get all this information are the referee, assistant referees and the 22 players in the field. Most of the time the 4th official can watch the match on a monitor but he may not act upon on it. See my first blogpost. This situation makes being a referee a very difficult job simply because the fans really know better. They know, in many cases, that the referee made a wrong decision. This information dis-balance should be taken away.
Because of the lack of information a lot of bad and wrong decisions are being made by referees. This can and should be reduced to a minimum to make our beloved game as fair as possible. Because of mistakes and the lack of information too many matches have the wrong outcome.
The mission of this blog is to show mistakes in football, often made by referees, in order to promote more technical appliances for referees. I’ll also add different views on possible rule changes and specific available technology for the fairness of football. I just want the game to be as fair as possible by helping the football referee. That’s my goal.
I welcome you to join the debate on the use of more technical appliances for referees. I’m looking forward to your reaction.
With regards,
Matthias Reinier
